Austin Calendar of Events

    When Communications Are Continually Delayed...

There are reports from many activist organizations that indicate both snail mail
and e-mail are continually late, often arriving after the planned meeting or rally.
A good alternative is to have a calendar on the web so those wanting to participate
in the political process may do so without Cointelpro interference....

This page is updated continually, so be sure to click the RELOAD button

Austin Project for a Participatory Society Book Group: Horizontalism: Voices of Popular Power in Argentina
The Austin Project for a Participatory Society's July book of the month is Marina Sitrin's Horizontalism: Voices of Popular Power in Argentina. Using horizontal forms of social organization, the diverse, autonomous social movements that exploded in Argentina following the IMF-led economic collapse of December 2001 not only transformed the fabric of Argentine society but also highlighted the possibility of a genuinely democratic alternative to global capital. Horizontalism is the story of those movements, as told by the men and women who are building them.
"I hope that the book will inspire people. How could it not? It is the real stories of people reorganizing their lives and communities in the ways in which they desire, individually and collectively." - Marina Sitrin
Participants are encouraged to purchase the book from Monkeywrench Books (407-6925, 110 E. North Loop), which has ordered extra copies.
Location: Carver Branch Library, 1161 Angelina St.

Lisa Fithian: Report Back from the G8 Protests in Heilingendamm, Germany
Recent protests against the G8 in Germany were organized by two major movements -- the autonomen, an anti-fascist, autonomist movement that gave rise to the black bloc tactic in the 1980's, and the anti-nuclear movement, with a strong history of blocking nuclear transports. These groups used a variety of tactics culminating in a massive 2 day takeover of the roads leading into Helingendamm. Despite an overwhelming show of force by police, thousands of people shut the roads down.
Community and labor organizer Lisa Fithian will relate stories and slides from the protests.
Location: MonkeyWrench Books, 110 E. North Loop.

Friday, July 20, noon - 1 p.m.
Protest: Corrections Corporation of America / Hutto Detention Center
Corrections Corporation of America is the world's largest and most notorious private prison corporation, operating more than a dozen prisons and immigrant detention centers in Texas alone. Demonstrators will protest CCA's profiting from immigrant detention expansion around Texas, including the T. Don Hutto detention center in Taylor, Texas which holds migrant families and asylum seekers, about half of whom are children.
